ZIMMERMAN, 1: Joan Baez

-    “Quina?”
-    “Ja saps, aquella sobre ulls blaus i diamants”

- "You gonna sing that song about robin's eggs and diamonds?"
Bob had asked me on the first day of rehearsals.
-  "Which one?"
-   "You know, that one about blue eyes and diamonds..."
-    "Oh", I said, "you must mean 'Diamonds And Rust', the song I wrote
for my husband, David. I wrote it while he was in prison."
-    "For your husband?" Bob said.
-    "Yeah. Who did you think it was about?" I stonewalled.
-  "Oh, hey, what the fuck do I know?"
-   "Never mind. Yeah, I'll sing it, if you like."]

Well, I'll be damned!
Here comes your ghost again.
But that's not unusual:
It's just that the moon is full
 and you happened to call.

And here I sit at on the telephone,
hearing a voice I'd known
a couple of light years ago
 headind straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
were bluer than robin's eggs.
My poetry was lousy, you say.
Where are you calling from?
a booth in the midwest.

Ten years ago I bought you some cufflink.
You brought me something.
We both know what memories can bring,
They bring diamonds and rust.

Well. you burst on the scene
 already a legend,
the unwashed fenomenon,
the original vagabond.
You strayed into my arms.

and there you stayed
temporality lost at sea.
The madonna was yours for free;
yes, the girl on the half-shell
could keep you unharmed.

Now I see you standing  with brown leaves falling all around and snow in your hair.
Now you're smiling out the window of the crummy hotel over Washingtong square.
Our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air,
speeking strictly for me: we both could have died then and there.

Now you're telling me
 you are not nostalgic.
Then give me another word for it,
you who're so good with words
and keeping things vague.

'Cause I need some of that vagueness now.
It's all come back too clearly:
Yes, I loved you dearly
and if you're offering me diamonds and rust
 I'm already paid.

Porten diamants i rovell.

Tu vas irrompre en l’escena
Sent ja una llegenda,
El fenomen en brut,
L’autèntic vagabund.
I et vas desviar cap als meus braços.

I allí et vas quedar
Temporalment perdut a la mar.
La madona va ser teva de franc;
Sí: la noia de la petxina
Et va mantenir sa i estalvi.

Parlant estrictament per mi: tots dos podríem haver mort aleshores i allí.

Ara m’expliques

I si em vas oferir diamants i rovell
Jo ja em dono per pagada .

DIAMONDS...

... and RUST

about a boxer

THE BOXER (Simon and Garfunkel)

I am just a poor boy and my story’s seldom told
I’ve squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.

When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin’ scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know.

Asking only workman’s wages, I come lookin’ for a job, but I get no offers
Just a come on from the whores on 7th avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there.

Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin’ even me
I am older than I once was, and younger than I’ll be, that’s not unusual
No it isn’t strange, after changes upon changes, we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same.

And I’m laying out my winter clothes, wishing I was gone, goin’ home
Where the New York city winters aren’t bleedin’ me, leadin’ me to go home.

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
‘til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains.
